London-based home buyers purchased more properties outside the city in 2021 than in any year since 2007, and the top destination is a city 20 minutes north of London
St Albans in Hertfordshire is the top destination for first-time buyers moving out of London this year, according to Hamptons.
The city is truly historic and is home to an 11th century cathedral, the oldest pub in the country, and the only medieval city belfry in England.

Probably the most iconic landmark in St Albans is the Norman cathedral dating back to the 11th century, and which is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in England.

There’s also the Clock Tower dating back to 1405 which is the only medieval city belfry in England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
History buffs can find out more about the city’s Roman history at the museum.
For some, a more inviting historical landmark will be Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, which claims to be the oldest pub in the country.

There’s also Hatfield House, one of the Treasure Houses of England.
St Albans has its fair share of green space, too, including Heartwood Forest and Verulamium Park.
Of course, like any other city there’s also plenty of independent shops and fantastic places to eat and drink.
And its only 20 minutes from London by train.
Other top spots for Londoners
On average, London sellers spent £18,980 less on their home outside the capital than the price of the property they sold, Hamptons said.
For existing home-owners who were moving out of London, Dartford in Kent was named as top spot.
While the Arun area of West Sussex, which includes Arundel and Bognor Regis, was the top destination for London-based buyers purchasing a second home, the estate agent found.
